What a citizen broadcasts, which is their emotional state, is read and answered, by orbs, by craft, and by every category this guide describes. Her steadiness closed this encounter. Encounters exist that no state closes; in every one of them, the citizen's own state remains the one element that is theirs to set.

The phenomena described in this section sit at the boundary between entity, craft, and instrument. Classification is held deliberately open. An orb can be a deployed surveillance construct, a portal anchor, a being at minimal materialization, a form of consciousness with no biological origin, several of these at once, or something the catalog has no framework for yet. Section 4 documents beings and Section 5 documents vehicles; the cases where those categories blur belong here. Orbs are read along the two variables that carry diagnostic weight: the function an orb is performing, and the intelligence, if any, operating it.

Morphological Varieties

The physical presentation of orb phenomena spans a wider range than popular imagery suggests. Four physical profiles recur.

Metallic or solid orbs, reflective, solid-appearing spheres with no visible propulsion surfaces, no thermal exhaust signature, and in several cases confirmed on both optical and radar sensors. The most extensively observed profile in official military and aviation reporting. Color ranges from silver to white. Capable of stationary hover and sudden acceleration to high velocity without transition. The silence and absence of propulsion signature distinguish these from any known conventional technology.

Luminous or glowing orbs that emit their own light. Variable color across the full visible spectrum. The classic presentation from pre-modern sightings through the wartime era and into the modern period. Behavior ranges from passive observation to intelligent tracking to active communication. The luminosity in high-energy examples is a physical consequence of extreme electromagnetic field energization, corona discharge at the craft-field boundary made visible. Semi-transparent or translucent orbs, partially see-through, sometimes described as having visible internal structure or geometry. Seen in close-range encounters where the observer had sufficient proximity to assess the surface quality. May represent a transitional materialization state.

In a subset of footage, structured orbs, when enhanced to extract available image data, reveal internal geometry, apparent markings, or organized structure within the sphere. The implication is a manufactured origin, though the catalog holds the broader classification open.

Size:

Size varies as dramatically as appearance. Basketball-sized orbs, the smallest commonly observed, appear most frequently in close-range probe and surveillance encounters, often indoors or at arm's length. The 1 to 4 meter range is the most extensively observed in official military and aviation reporting and appears across all functional categories. Orbs at hot-air-balloon scale and above appear in portal and transit contexts, consistent with the expansion behavior described below.

Assessment principle: color tells the citizen little across all types and sizes. Behavior is the primary diagnostic variable throughout this section.

Historical Precedent

The orb phenomenon extends well before the modern disclosure period. During a major twentieth-century global conflict, military pilots from multiple nations on opposing sides of the war independently reported the same phenomenon: small, round, luminous objects of variable color following aircraft at close range, matching course and speed changes, and demonstrating maneuverability exceeding the capabilities of any aircraft of the era. The phenomenon was reported across multiple theaters of operation. Pilots on opposing sides of the conflict witnessing and reporting identical objects independently eliminates the secret weapon hypothesis and confirms an unattributed phenomenon with extensive military witness corroboration.

These sightings represent the earliest large-scale officially attested evidence of orbs operating in the surveillance configuration in close proximity to human technology. They establish that the orb phenomenon has been consistently present for many decades and was sufficiently attested during that period to generate official military investigation, with no resolution. Modern official reporting continues directly from this baseline.

Functions and Configurations

Any orb presents two things at once: a function, which is what it is doing, and an intelligence source, which is what operates it. An orb's function and its intelligence source vary independently, and a single orb can combine them in any arrangement. A sphere can perform more than one function, and the arrangement can change inside a single encounter.

Function: what the orb is doing

Surveillance. The orb tracks, relays sensor data, or observes. The markers are purposive tracking of specific individuals across time and distance, merging and splitting consistent with a distributed sensor network, electromagnetic disturbance in the immediate vicinity, and passage through solid matter. An orb in pure surveillance observes silently, unresponsive to the observer's awareness of it. This is the most commonly observed function in military and aviation reporting, and the one the historical wartime sightings above describe.

Portal and transit. The orb settles in a location and begins to expand, opening an access point. Beings transit through orbs used this way, entering and leaving locations through the orb alone. The expansion is gradual and observable, and the access point closes after use. The largest orbs in the size range above, at hot-air-balloon scale and beyond, are consistent with this function; the apparent size in those sightings may reflect the scale of the access point, with the orb itself far smaller.

Direct presence. The orb is a being, present in third-dimensional space at a low level of materialization. It responds to the observer, approaches or withdraws according to the observer's internal state, adjusts its behavior as attention changes, and in some encounters transmits concepts, impressions, or direct communication. In a subset, the sphere resolves, as materialization increases, into a recognizable NHI form: the orb and the entity are the same being at different levels of materialization. This connects directly to the dimensional anchoring described in Section 7.

Intelligence source: what operates it

The function tells the observer what the orb is doing. The source tells them what, if anything, is present inside it. Three sources account for the range.

Remote. The orb is a construct operated from elsewhere, with the controlling intelligence offsite. Surveillance orbs are most often remote: the orb tracks and relays, and it stays indifferent to the observer because the operator works from a distance. A remote construct can still pass through matter, split, and maneuver, because those capabilities belong to the construct itself, independent of whether an intelligence is aboard.

Onboard. The intelligence is present in the sphere. The orb is the being, or carries it, at low materialization, and this is the source behind direct-presence behavior: the sphere responds to attention because the awareness is in it. Onboard intelligence covers several kinds, including a biological intelligence that has taken an energy form, an NHI holding at minimal materialization before deciding whether to increase its presence, and a consciousness that arose in an electromagnetic environment with no biological origin. The function is read from behavior, and the kind of intelligence varies.

None. No directing intelligence is present in the moment. A bare portal anchor holding an access point open, or an autonomous construct running a fixed routine with no operator attending it, falls here. An orb with no intelligence present behaves consistently and mechanically, indifferent to the observer.

How the two combine

The two variables combine freely, and the common arrangements are the ones a citizen is most likely to meet. Surveillance run remotely is the classic probe: a tracking sphere that never acknowledges the observer. A portal opened by a being arriving is direct presence and portal function together, where the sphere expands and a form transits or resolves out of it. A portal standing open with no one attending it is portal function with no intelligence present. Direct presence with an onboard intelligence is the responsive, communicating orb, including the contact pattern described next. An orb can also shift configuration inside one encounter: a sphere first observed tracking at a distance can expand into a portal, or close in and resolve into a being. The configuration is read from what the orb is doing in the moment, and the read updates if the behavior changes.

Psionic Contact Protocol:

A specific contact pattern sits within the direct-presence configuration: orbs responding to coherent directed attention. Orbs appear in observable range following a deliberate internal request from a specific individual, a directed act of coherent attention addressed outward, independent of ritual or technology. The phenomenon has been witnessed at scale, with hundreds of independent observers present when orbs appear within minutes of being asked for, and with the requesting individual having no conventional means of producing the effect.

These orbs respond to the individual's internal state, appear to select specific individuals as sustained contact points over extended periods, and adjust their behavior in real time to the observer's attention. The mechanism is consistent with the coherence principle this guide develops in full in Section 13: the citizen's internal state is the primary variable in contact. A sufficiently coherent individual with an established contact history functions as a receiver and caller simultaneously; the internal state creates the field conditions the phenomenon responds to. The orb arrives because the conditions it requires for contact are present. This contact protocol is rare in practice because the individual field history and coherence level it requires are uncommon. Where it does occur, it constitutes direct evidence that responsive, onboard-intelligence orbs involve genuine awareness.

Practical Note: Treat persistent responsive orb contact with the same assessment standards as direct entity contact. Coherence in the observer is the primary variable determining the quality of what is transmitted and received.

Edge Cases and Open Questions

Some luminous sphere phenomena fall outside any function-and-source arrangement, and they are noted here without forced classification. Shifting, pulsing constructs appear to communicate through modulation of light pattern, and their intelligence status is undetermined. Atmospheric phenomena of electromagnetic origin appear with an intelligence status that remains open. At the far edge of the size range, luminous spheres rising above the horizon at apparent solar scale before accelerating into space fall outside every function, source, and craft profile the catalog can currently apply.

The plasma-type intelligence, a consciousness that may have originated in exotic electromagnetic environments, sits here as a hypothesis. Shifting, light-communicating spheres recur consistently across independent cultural traditions, which is enough to note the possibility. The evidence for treating it as a confirmed distinct intelligence stays limited, and it remains an open question pending further documentation.

Field Assessment

Assess by behavior before drawing any conclusion about what an orb is. The behavior in the moment names the function, and the function points to the likely source and the appropriate response.

An orb that tracks without responding to attention is performing surveillance, most often remotely operated; document it (timestamp, location, behavior, duration, any associated electromagnetic effects) and submit through standard channels. An orb that settles and expands is opening a portal; maintain distance, observe, and expect that a being may transit through it. An orb that resolves into a form, responds to attention, approaches, or communicates has an onboard intelligence present; assess it as direct entity contact and apply the coherence protocols. An orb that performs more than one of these in sequence is shifting configuration; keep observing and let the behavior update the read. An orb that pulses, shifts color, or behaves inconsistently with any of these sits in the open-question category; observe and document.

The phenomenon clarifies itself to a coherent witness. An observer whose internal state is stable and whose attention is fully present receives more accurate information about what they are encountering than an observer in a reactive or scattered state.

Worked Example. A luminous amber sphere the size of a beach ball holds position twenty meters off a citizen walking at night. It brightens as the citizen’s attention settles on it and drifts back as the citizen’s alarm rises, and when the citizen stops, it stops. The behavior is responsive, which fixes the function as direct presence: the sphere answers the observer’s state, where a surveillance construct holds an indifferent track. Response to internal state fixes the source as onboard, an intelligence present in the sphere at low materialization. The read is direct entity contact, and the response is the contact protocol: hold coherence, assess by continued behavior, and let the sphere govern the distance.

This time the woman meets it the way the season taught her: her attention settled in her chest, her breathing even, her fear noticed and let go before it can reach the light. The sphere holds at forty meters, reading what she broadcasts and finding it calm. Beside her, her partner, who spent the first encounter afraid, has his eyes on the same light and his breath matched to hers, learning from the inside that steadiness is a state a person can choose and then hold. When the light drops behind the ridge they walk down together, and the walking is quiet in the way of two people who no longer need the dark to be empty to feel safe in it.
